Predictions: Best Supporting Actor
This will be a short one. The entry is short because there is one clear winner for this category. That winner’s name: Albert Brooks. Mr. Brooks has always been known as a comedian but his unbelievable turn as the sadistic Bernie Rose should help him gain the globe. Brooks chews up the scenery throughout the entire running time of Drive. He plays off each character well and the scene between him Bryan Cranston’s amiable Shannon is tough to watch. His transformation is remarkable and I am an interested in seeing more depth and memorable characters from Mr. Brooks in the future. As much as I feel he can win, Jonah Hill could serve as the next best choice. His shift towards dramatic fare is impressive as well since he holds his own against seasoned starts like Brad Pitt and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Despite this, my fingers are still crossed for Albert.
Predictions: Best Supporting Actress
Octavia Spencer FTW! The Help’s ensemble is a guaranteed win at the SAG awards but Ms. Spencer takes the cake for this category. Her mouthful Minnie was a highlight to watch. Minnie was the heart while Viola Davis’s Aibileen was the soul. Octavia lit up the screen every time. Like Mr. Brooks, she played off the other actors well. From her caring persona to the vengeful employee, Octavia gives this character a lot of room to play. Each new version is completely believable and relatable. Let’s be honest, how many times have we wanted to dosomething to a rude boss? As I did for Mr. Brooks, I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed for Ms. Spencer. The only other contende that I can see winning would be Shailene Woodley since she is quite a hot commodity now. Ms. Woodley is the better bet at second place but still hoping Ms. Spencer wins.
